Cartoon Made By: Inkcinct.com (Australian Cartoon Website)
This cartoon companies twist on the tale of Little Red Riding Hood shows how cell phone companies are a threat to younger people, especially young females. This cartoon can then be clarified as a social cartoon, since this is a common problem for not only young people but older people too. Just like credit card companies, cell phone providers will try to do anything to get you to sign their contract. Once you sign the contract (if you are gullible or don’t read it correctly), they will start ripping you off or the contract will not be something you wanted or expected. The wolf being dressed in a suit like a salesman would be clarifies that he is trying to sell little red something. The wolf comes off as charming at first (just as he is in the tale, when he first meets Little Red in the beginning of the forest), but little does Red know he is going to try to get her stuck in a plan (eat her).
I really liked this cartoon because I have some friends and family members who have fallen guilty to ridiculous cell phone plans, and it really is something that needs to be brought up more. These companies don’t care whether they’re taking money from a needy college student, a single mother of four, or an elderly person that doesn’t even understand cell phones. I think the use of Little Red Riding Hood was perfect because it is one of the most thought-of tales when it comes to the predator-prey relationship. Little Red is they prey walking (while on her cell phone) in the cartoon, and the predator is the wolf (waiting in an alley with a devilish grin, which is suspicious) waiting to get the girl to sign his contract.
The cartoon is successful in showing the problem with cell phone companies and how they unload complex and misleading information to young woman in order to get them to sign a cell phone contract. It is also successful in relating this modern social problem to a fairy tale that is decades years old.
