Dr. Greg Alles’ lecture on “Folk and Fairy Tales of Possessed People from East and Northeast India” was very interesting. This was especially an entertaining lecture for me because of my love for horror movies, which portray demonic possessions very much. However, in the lecture I was able to learn about how different possession in the Indian culture and Fairy Tales is from the possessions we see in horror movies. Dr. Valk defined possessions as something where some sort of entity disturbs the consciousness and changes the behavior of a person. He also explained that possessions have a redundant psychological connection to suppressed emotion. Dr. Valk went on to explain more in his lecture by saying how possessions are connected with a social strata of women and the poor. We also learned that the meaning of “Narrative Distance,” and much of his lecture connected how these supernatural beliefs and violence seen in possessions in this culture also arise in Fairy Tales and in horror pop culture (such as the foot biting in possession movies).
The other person who gave the lecture on Skype was Dr. Margaret Lyngdoh, who is living in Shillon right now. I really enjoyed her slides on her travels to Khasi, which has a matrilineal society, where lineage and inheritance are its main characteristics. There are over 214 Ethnic groups here, and Dr. Lyngdoh spoke of the elements of the place, which are the: cursed, sacred, and the ambivalent. I really enjoyed the part of the lecture where she spoke of the stories of the “Puri” which are the spirit women, and I also enjoyed learning about the legends of the “Sangkhin,” which are people who turn into water creatures. Here we see the connection to Fairy Tales we have read because it is a story of human transformation/morphology. Another thing similar was how they see the chicken as a symbol of Jesus, while in the tales we have read the chicken or bird has represented many other things.
Overall, I really enjoyed these lectures and I am thankful that we were able to learn from such people of different cultures with experience in the subject of possession. I learned what liminal ontologies are from Dr. Lyngdoh too, and overall the whole lecture taught me more about the psychological and cultural aspects of possessions. From this, I was also able to see how much this connects to our class because we saw transformations, symbols, religion, etc.
